Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am so happy to be back at Dover to work as the interim principal of Dover High School.  I spent my first week meeting with all the students and staff, reviewing safety procedures and protocols, and renewing all friendships.

My initial focus is to get every class to the finish line in June, and, to that end, I promise to be visible, approachable and protective of the students’ much-needed academic time.  Each grade needs something unique.

  • Freshmen should get a minimum of 5 ½ credits, improve foundational skills, establish strong work habits and begin their career exploration.

  • Sophomores should have a strong stable of credits, select challenging courses and electives for junior year, pass Regents exams, work on community service and start to clarify some career/college next steps.

  • Juniors need to finish strongly, set up a valuable senior year schedule, pass important Regents and AP exams, take the SAT’s if college is a goal, make some college visits, continue community service and enjoy the prom.

  • Seniors must successfully complete all required graduation credits, apply for scholarships, finish community service, earn as many AP and Dutchess Community College credits as possible, have a great class trip and celebrate with each other their many accomplishments with everything leading up to graduation day!!!!

Spring fever in high school can lead to bad habits.  In the next few months, I am going to stress the importance of getting to school and class on time, ready for important and meaningful instruction.  While the focus will remain on academics, students will have many opportunities to earn their fun.  Please help us help your child by encouraging your child to do their best and come to school everyday ready to learn!

Respectfully,

Mike Tierney
